Serratus Anterior

Overview

The serratus anterior is a fan-shaped muscle that originates on the upper eight or nine ribs and inserts along the medial border of the scapula. It protracts the scapula and stabilizes it against the ribcage during pushing movements.

Pain Pattern

Trigger points in the serratus anterior refer pain along the lateral chest wall, into the lower angle of the shoulder blade, and sometimes down the inner arm. The pain is often described as a deep side stitch that does not resolve with rest.

Common Causes

Prolonged overhead work, heavy pushing exercises, chronic coughing, and anxiety-related chest breathing patterns all contribute to trigger point development. Desk workers who reach forward repeatedly are also at risk.

How to Use the Pressure Pointer

Position the Pressure Pointer on the lateral ribcage, just below the armpit. Apply moderate pressure and hold for 60 seconds on each tender point. Work along the ribcage from the mid-axillary line toward the back. Breathe slowly during treatment.
